Feel free to call it a "trompement" or maybe just a delightful pun with a honourable bow to Mr. Wilde but a morsel past a week into my "experiment" and I have begun to see "the importance of twitter".
While I know you'll hear the endless banter of social networking sites being the new frontier as a an advertising medium, it should first be understood that the deep roots of attracting clients have been uplifted and the entire game has changed. While the once relative simple notion of working your way through "dials" sits behind a velvet rope section of the museum, the new exhibit that has open is standard business email.
Many will lay claim that the endless barrage of business emails effectively ate itself as the consumer was forced to all but abandon the method of conduct but in-truth its assassin came for it without ever being expected. If the truth death dealer of business email can be found it did not necessarily come via the scores of unsolicited offers but partially to the technological shift to the "smart phone". Though unexpected, the not-so gradual merging of all e-mail to mobile while considered to enhance efficiency and productivity, forced a shorter line of communication. While there will be a few purists who'll scamper here and there to actually read a well flowing paragraph or two, the future of a great deal of business communication unfolds within the oh-so brilliant literary experience of one-hundred forty characters.
Yet all the cards aren't quite on the table mes amis as this area is still new-fallen snow. The hurdles of getting your message across to potential to consumers is still the same, just posed in a different stance but effectively competing against the world, in your own region. To merely have a presence online is no longer sufficient and to flourish, the entire culture of a business must somehow shift to the frontier.
However if our croupier hasn't turned over all the cards it is because while much of commentary, including my own, has been of business interests, it is the consumer who is most impacted. The handbills at the front-door may have been replaced the endless stream of emails to your inbox but how much different is that to the "tweet", which call it what you will, is an advertisement for something, by someone and you have no idea how factual it is. If there is artistry within a one-hundred forty characters message, it is from the slightest of hands and I have yet to see it.
If the new dawn of advertising is here, it is in-truth not terribly different from the same one that was ushered in twenty-five years ago. The same but different if you will. Technology has shifted, not to purify the sound but once again hollow of substance and style. Somewhere out there right now in a time to late to call night and to early to call morn, a young guitarist stands with a Johnny Thunders snarl and the freshly torn shirt he bought at the mall, yet he can barely play and needs to "wiki" the bomb I just dropped.
And so it goes my little "experiment", this wandering tale of my life. I will continue to write on tablets in soft lead pencil and one sunny day, juxtoposed to those bite-sized tweets, I will pour them into print but until then...
